Armored Classic Motorcycle Jacket

armored-classicUnik has come out with a modern version of the classic traditional style motorcycle jacket. Whats so modern about it? Body Armor!

Always thinking about safety, Unik’s new classic design has pockets of soft, removable temprafoam at the shoulders, elbows, and back to offer extra protection at the most vulnerable points of the upper torso in the event of a fall.

Safety and Comfort and plenty of storage space! Of course this jacket comes with a zip out liner, and it is vented in the front and back for optimal air flow. Another extra is the built in padding for kidney protection.  The multi function utility  pocket system at the chest consists of 6 outide pockets and 2 inside for extra storage.

Made from Uniks affordable premium riding grade buffalo leather, this jacket is held to tough and durable specifications to offer excellent protection  from the hazards of the asphalt road.

Chaps by Unik International

naked-leather-chapUnik has an excellent line of leather motorcycle chaps both  unisex, and a women’s line called Great Fit. Today we’re going to look at the best of the best of the best!

These are the matching chaps for Unik’s Pistol Pete motorcycle jacket and vest of the Touring Series. Made from the thickest, softest naked leather cowhide, these chaps have a thickness of a whopping 1.5mm. This is the best protection for the legs you can get against an unfortunate tumble on an asphalt road.

Sizes range from 3XS to 5XL and the spandex on the inner thighs make for an even better, tighter fit.

They have the oh so popular jean style pockets, and you can order them plain, or with a fine braided trim.

Remember, chap size is determined by your thigh measurement at its thickest part WITH your jeans ON! (or your birthday suit if thats what you want to wear underneath them :>0)

Leather offers the best protection against abrasion and the elements. As motorcycle safety gear goes, experts agree that riding grade leather jackets and chaps rank right up there with the helmet. Leather does for your hide what a helmet does for your head!

Ironhorse Backers Looking into Lawsuit against Grayslake

Last weekend, one of the largest planned biker rallies in the mid west was abruptly cancelled by town officials two days before the event was scheduled.

The village of Grayslake Illinois pulled the permit for the 4th annual Ironhorse Motorcycle Roundup after being warned by some state cops and some feds that rival motorcycle “gangstas”, the Outlaws and Hells Lovers (affiliates of the bad boy Angels), were planning to have a little brew-ha-ha.

The event was expected to attract from 20,000 to 40,000 bikers from around the country. Over 120 vendors were expecting to participate. Many people lost a lot of money, and/or the opportunity to make some.

Because the town was afraid a fight might break out at a biker rally? Gimme a break!

Maintaining the Leather

You just got yourself a brand new leather motorcycle jacket and a pair of chaps. You’re looking cool and shiny cruising down a mountain road, when all of a sudden the sky breaks loose all over your spanking clean leather. Ruined? I think not, if you had the foresight to prepare for the unexpected.

While all serious bikers know of the valuable protection afforded by good quality motorcycle leather, the fact of the matter is that riding motorcycles is an outdoor recreation, and as such, the leather we wear is going to be exposed to the elements.

An unexpected rain storm on a crisp autumn day, a roadside mud bath from a clueless SUV, oil, grease and gasoline, even scruff marks from close encounters of the road all take a toll on your leather motorcycle gear.

Whether you splurged for a top of the line naked leather set, went for the more affordable top grain, or just got some really cheap splits, there are precautions you can take, and repairs that can be made to help ensure that your leathers have a reasonable lifetime.

Here’s a post I ran across from Biker Boyz blog: 10 Tips To Help Your Motorcycle Leather Last Longer. Heed the Boyz advice, take care of your leathers and they will return the favor.

Leather Motorcycle Jackets: Understanding the Tanning Process

Ladies Motorcycle JacketBecause leather is the skin of an animal, if left untreated it will decompose and rot. Tanning makes the leather rot proof and consists of several stages, the more stages implemented, the thinner the leather. Stages include removing the hair, the outer layer of skin, and the fatty part of the flesh. Afterwards, the hides are treated either with animal oils, vegetable, alum, or chrome salt in order to stabilize the skin.

The term grain is used to describe the epidermis or outer layer of skin, and should be understood to determine the choices of leather available. The grain of the hide has the best fiber strength and a natural breathability, and depending on how much of the grain is removed in the tanning process determines the durability, thickness and comfort of the leather motorcycle jacket.

What to look for when Shopping for a Motorcycle Jacket

Style is good, and there are many out there. But when considering a new motorcycle jacket purchase, protection should be of the utmost concern, and different types of leather afford various degrees of protection.
First of all, riding grade motorcycle jackets should be made from cowhide or buffalo hide. Avoid Pigskin. While it is thick and pretty, it is not very durable and will tear easily, leaving you with little between your hide and the road. The same is true with the other soft leathers such as lambskin or deerskin. Soft leather is perfectly fine for a vest, or other piece of apparel not meant for protection.

But for a motorcycle jacket or chaps for that matter, they are your only defense between your skin and the road, and should be made from the toughest, thickest leather you can get.
